NEW CLIENTS

New clients start with one or two 1:1 sessions in pilates for equipment sessions , which incorporate a postural assessment, informal strength and flexibility assessments and tailoring of a programme based on client goals and body type, etc. After this clients continue with 1:1 sessions or group sessions of 1:3. They choose a time suitable to them. The sessions run for 1 - 1.25 hrs.

GOALS OF PILATES

To increase postural awareness and correct faulty movement patterns, adopt correct breathing patterns and focus on working from the 'inside out'. Joseph Pilates concentrated on the 'powerhouse' or core centre, consisting of 4 major abdominal muscles and their role in assisting ease of movment and strength and supporting the back. A lot of Pilates is performed lying down on your back, side or belly, which is low impact on the joints. Those clients having issues with osteoporosis/penia, etc, have their programmes tailored so as to incorporate weightbearing more specifically for their bones. Other clients post-car accident, etc will focus more on strengthening the deep neck flexors, for instance, after whiplash. Pilates is versatile in that it can suit everyone and aims to target specific imbalances (studio pilates) in the body and address underlying problems relating to injury.

ELEMENTS PILATES & WELLNESS STUDIO

Elements Pilates & Wellness Studio offers a new and innovative approach to the Pilates Method, complimented by similar alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture. The studio has been running for 7 years and focuses on equipment pilates tailored to the individual.

I am hoping to integrate more mat classes into the timetable such as fitball, theraband, ring and roller, intermediate / advanced matwork and mums / bubs classes. Expressions of interest are much appreciated! There will soon be a new piece of equipment for our playground also! It is called the Thoracic Barrel and is great for loosening those tight hip flexors and working / stretching the sides of the body. I couldn’t resist, so keep your eyes peeled.

Pilates is a lifestyle. It teaches you to breathe in a way which takes us back to our infanthood, when most of us actually used all the necessary muscles requires to take and expel a full breath effectively to stay healthy. This usually starts out as an unconscious mechanism and over time, with fact-paced living and stressful careers, some of us can end up breathing shallow and inconsistently using hardly any of the muscles needed to stay balanced and relaxed. So we work a lot on thoracic breath to increase lung capacity and flexibility between the muscles of the ribs that we had when we started out as little critters! Also, there is a huge emphasis on ‘core strength’, or our ‘powerhouse’, as Joseph Pilates put it. It is an easy sidestep for our bodies to take the easy way out of work and use all our ‘prime mover’ muscles without the assistance of our inner strength. And sometimes, due to simply lack of knowledge or vanity, we either don’t know these other muscles exist, or workout ineffectively so that the already strong muscles get stronger and the already weak muscles get weaker! It is pretty hard to isolate these muscles to work at their full capacity unless we have awesome body awareness or someone is watching our alignment and movement patterns. That’s why Studio Pilates is of great benefit! We can think we’re doing something perfectly, but chances are, we are moving far less effectively than we think. Habits are hard to break.

So, all in all, the emphasis is on breathing, core strength, spinal articulation (keeping our spine evenly flexible),

By consistently addressing these things, we will move with much greater ease and risk less injury and discomfort in general living. Our postural awareness increases considerably (often we grow a couple of centimetres taller just by standing straighter) and our energy is raised. We become more productive and therefore more beneficial to ourselves and the greater community!

The next page is an indication of our prices and times and what you should expect in each type of class available. Please feel free to call the studio at any time on (08) 9336 4911 or fax (08) 9336 4922 for more information of to make a booking.

Explanation of costings and session types: Floor classes are on the mat with no more than 10 people in a class. It is a generalized all-over body workout where the instructor is up the front for you to follow. It is suitable to those with no injuries, but can be fine for those with mild neck/shoulder tension or mild low back pain, etc. Please ask the instructor when booking if you are not sure if the class is suitable. The exercises are modified accordingly if a client feels discomfort or prefers an easier or harder option. Make sure you focus only on yourself and not worry about anyone else’s level of fitness around you! This is your time to pamper your own needs!

Studio sessions begin with an initial assessment where the instructor completes a postural assessment / strength / flexibility assessments and tailors a program to your goals, strengths, weaknesses, imbalances etc, which is used as an outline for further sessions and aims. Each time you come in the workout can be different depending on your preference and involves floorwork, fitball, Reformer, Trapeze Table and Wunda Chair, etc depending on the day! The small group sessions have no more than 3 people in them and everyone has their own program. The instructor takes you through your workout and helps to correct your alignment, etc and will often take notes to keep a record of which exercises you are doing and how you are progressing.

Please bring a pair of socks for hygienic purposes for the equipment and a towel. Wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a drink if you like (we have filtered water for you to use otherwise).
